Over the past few weeks, the global coronavirus crisis has tested the business continuity plans and service delivery capabilities of almost every business on the planet. You only have to look at shortages of goods in retail stores to understand just how fragile and close to capacity the underlying delivery infrastructure is.

Registry DNS

The same can be said about Internet Infrastructure, in particular Registry DNS. Registry DNS is core to the successful operation of the Internet addressing system. Many Top Level Domains have operated without a secondary or backup DNS solution for many years.

However, in light of the current global pandemic, CentralNic is concerned that some Registry Operators may be worried about ensuring the availability of websites and domain names that are connected to their existing Registry DNS.

Therefore, CentralNic is taking unilateral action to help ccTLDs alleviate this concern and provide an additional level of reassurance to ccTLD operators in these trying times.

Therefore from Monday 6th April 2020, CentralNic will be offering the use of its world-class Registry DNS free of charge to Registry Operators until the pandemic has run its course.

Emergency Back-end Registry

CentralNic has also decided to provide an emergency Back-End Registry capability for ccTLDs that do not currently have one, using its Shared Registry System, ready for a rapid switchover in the case of a system outage or failure.

CentralNic is offering these services without charge to all ccTLDs, on a best efforts basis.

This is in order to do what we can to ensure the availability of domain names and access to websites around the globe.

CentralNic will review the continued need for these services on a quarterly basis until things have returned to a more normal footing.

Both solutions can be implemented rapidly and with little effort on the part of the Registry Operator.

If you would like us to contact you to discuss how we can help you implement these free services please click here, register your interest and one of our experts will contact you directly.

Alternatively, if you would like to discuss things with me in person, please feel free to contact me at gavin.brown@centralnic.com.

I hope you continue to keep well and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards

About CentralNic's Registry DNS

CentralNic operates a robust and scalable DNS network with a truly global reach. Multiple Points of Presence (POPs) are deployed on every continent except Antarctica, and CentralNic continues to add new locations regularly, reflecting the growing demand from end-users. This ensures that DNS queries are answered quickly and locally, ensuring the best possible performance in terms of latency and stability.

CentralNic’s DNS network has 86 nodes in 30 countries and hosts over 16 million domain names while maintaining over 99% spare query capacity; so even the addition of several of the largest ccTLDs will have a negligible impact on service.
